This is Basha, the only tribe in China legally allowed to own guns—not for use against people but to protect their mountains and forests.
When children are born here, they plant a tree of life on the same day. When they die, this same tree will be cut down to make a coffin. Instead of a headstone, they’ll plant another tree, representing a return to nature.
At fifteen, boys will receive a hunting rifle and shave their heads with a sickle until there’s only one section of hair left, symbolizing a tree. This signifies that there is now one more protector of the forest.
