Secrets of the Forbidden City Wells

Why can't you drink water from the wells at the Forbidden City?

There are actually over 70 wells in the Forbidden City, created to prevent fires. But why did no one dare to drink from them?

The first reason is the fear of being poisoned. Members of the emperor’s harem would often sabotage each other to gain power. For instance, during the Ming Dynasty, Imperial Noble Consort Wan poured poison into the wells to prevent the other consorts from becoming pregnant.

Another reason is that throughout the Ming and Qing Dynasties, people would often be thrown into the wells. For example, the Zhenfei Well in the northeast of the Forbidden City marks where Imperial Consort Zhen was killed by the bitter Empress Dowager for diverting the emperor's attention away from her niece.

As a result, those residing in the Forbidden Palace would opt to drink water transported from Yuquan Hill instead.
