How the Ancient Chinese Stored Money

Do you know how the ancient Chinese stored their money when banks did not exist?

Most commoners would hang their coins on the beams of their roofs. This is why thieves back then were called 梁上君子 "gentlemen of the beams."

Wealthier families would use jars to store their riches and bury them in their yards. One man in particular worried about forgetting where he hid his money, so he placed a sign saying ”There are no 300 taels of silver buried here.” Unfortunately, in trying to remind himself, he also reminded burglars.

In recent years, there have even been rumors of people becoming instantly rich after discovering ancient money hidden in the walls and cellars of old houses!
