Ethnic Groups in China: Miao People

This ethnic group in China is known for wearing silver from head to toe. They are the Miao people. Mothers pass along their silver jewelry and embroidered dresses for their daughters to wear on special occasions and on their wedding days.

If you’re visiting a Miao village, there are 3 customs you must know:

No. 1: Don’t touch a Miao woman’s hair. If you do, you have to do hard labor in her home for 3 years.

No. 2: If you’re drinking fresh mountain water, first tie a knot in a blade of grass and throw it into the water, otherwise you will get sick.

No. 3: Don’t randomly accept a Miao lady’s handkerchief or belt. If you do, it means you like her back and accept her hand in marriage.
